African Union & AfSA Initiatives
-
Meshack played a pivotal role in founding the African Space Agency (AfSA) as an organ of the African Union. With a clear mission to advance Africa’s position in space exploration and technology, AfSA coordinates space activities and drives the implementation of programs that support development across the continent.
-
As a leading figure in the African Union’s Space Working Group, Meshack led the creation of the African Space Policy and Strategy, which was formally adopted in 2016 by the Assembly of African Union Heads of State and Government. This comprehensive strategy established AfSA’s primary focus areas: Earth Observation, Satellite Communication, Navigation, Positioning and Timing, and Astronomy. His work provided the framework for AfSA’s mission and priorities across Africa.
-
To support AfSA’s establishment, Meshack led an audit of continental space technology infrastructure, assessing capacity in space engineering, space physics, and the socio-economic benefits of space investment. His leadership extended to the process of selecting Egypt as the host country for AfSA, following a detailed assessment presented to the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, who endorsed Egypt as the agency’s official headquarters.
Science, Tech & Innovation Leadership
-
As Capacity Lead for Space and Emerging Technologies at the African Union Commission, Meshack led the development of the Science, Technology, and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA-2034). This strategy sets a comprehensive roadmap for advancing Africa’s scientific and technological capabilities to drive sustainable development.
-
Representing Africa’s interests on a global stage, Meshack contributed to the G20 Ministerial Declaration on Research and Innovation. He championed the use of open-source technology and advocated for international cooperation to support initiatives in:
North-South Cooperation
Environmental Sustainability
Health and Access to Information
Sustainable Development
Inclusion and Diversity in Science
GMES & Africa Programme
-
Meshack played a central role in the design and implementation of the GMES & Africa programme, a €100 million initiative developed in partnership with the European Union to enhance Earth Observation capacities across Africa. This program fosters environmental monitoring and sustainable development through advanced satellite-based observation.
-
Built a 160-institution collaborative network across 45 African states.
Delivered training to over 10,000 scientists with partners like ESA.
Established Earth Observation programs with over 50 African universities.
Launched an online platform hosting over 100 technical courses.
US-Africa Space Collaboration
-
Meshack established collaborative engagements between the African Union and the US White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), focusing on advancing Science, Technology, and Innovation partnerships between Africa and the US.
-
National Space Councils Synergy: Enabled cooperation between the Africa and US National Space Councils.
Spaceport & Spectrum Management: Supported radio frequency and spaceport regulation development.
Space Situational Awareness: Advanced Africa's training in Space Situational Awareness.
Human Capital Development: Partnered with NASA for skill-building programs in space technology.
FAA Spaceport Regulations: Collaborated with the FAA on international spaceport standards.
New Space Parnerships
-
Meshack co-led the technical drafting and strategic negotiations of the New Space Partnership between the African Space Agency, European Commission, ESA, and other stakeholders. This partnership focuses on advancing inter-continental programs in Earth Observation, Satellite Communication, Navigation, and Space Engineering, supporting Africa’s space development through collaborative initiatives.
-
The New Space Partnership prioritizes sustainable development, green technology, and the growth of Africa’s space industry. Its objectives include:
Inter-governmental Collaborations
Academic and Research Engagements
Industrial Partnerships
Founder of AfriOrbit Space
-
Meshack founded AfriOrbit Space, a space engineering focused business for designing and manufacturing Educational Satellites and Rockets that are used for hands-on training in universities, colleges and high schools.
